Start with a clear safety assessment
Some electrical problems need prompt professional attention, but the right response depends on what is happening at the property. When you call, describe the symptoms, whether any circuits have tripped, and whether you can see damage, heat, smoke or water near electrical equipment.
AVAG will first help establish whether the issue appears to be within the property and whether attendance is appropriate. At the property, the immediate priority is to identify the affected circuit, reduce risk and explain what is required to restore safe operation.
Get everyone out and call 999. Do not re-enter the property. An electrician is not a substitute for the emergency services.
London Fire Brigade emergency guidance →What an urgent visit can include
The work may include inspection and testing, identifying the affected circuit or accessory, isolating unsafe equipment, carrying out a suitable repair where possible, or making the installation safe until further work can be completed.
Parts, access and the condition of the installation affect what can be completed during the first visit. If a permanent repair requires additional work or specialist materials, the findings and next steps are explained before anything further is agreed.
Before you call
- Note which lights, sockets, appliances or rooms are affected.
- Tell us whether protective devices have tripped and whether they trip again.
- Do not keep resetting a circuit that repeatedly trips.
- Stop using damaged, scorched, unusually hot or sparking equipment.
- Send photographs only when it is safe to do so.
- If the entire street appears to have lost power, check with your electricity network operator.

Urgent attendance and pricing
Availability depends on location, current commitments and the nature of the problem. The applicable call-out price is confirmed before attendance. Evening, late-night and Bank Holiday pricing may apply; see our current guide prices.
Do you provide a 24-hour guaranteed service?+
No. Urgent attendance is subject to electrician availability. Call with the postcode and symptoms so we can confirm the next available option.
Will the fault always be repaired during the first visit?+
Not always. The first priority is to identify the problem and make the installation safe. A permanent repair may require further work, access or materials.
Should I keep resetting a tripping circuit?+
No. Repeated operation can indicate a fault. Leave the affected circuit off and seek professional advice.
Can I send photographs first?+
Yes, if it is safe. Photos can help explain the issue, but they do not replace inspection and testing.
