Electrician testing a modern consumer unit

Fuse box upgrades

Consumer unit
replacement London.

Fuse box and consumer unit upgrades from £595, with modern protection, careful testing and clear pricing before work proceeds.

Consumer unit replacement cost in London

A consumer unit replacement is more than changing the box on the wall. The new protective devices are connected to your existing circuits, so the condition of those circuits matters. AVAG Electrical Services gives a clear guide price first, then checks the installation before taking responsibility for the replacement and certification.

Guide priceFrom £595For a straightforward consumer unit replacement where the existing installation is suitable and tests satisfactorily.

The “from” price is not a guaranteed fixed price from a photograph. Hidden faults, unsuitable earthing or bonding, borrowed/shared neutrals, damaged circuits, poor insulation resistance, continuity problems or other defects can only be confirmed by inspection and electrical testing.

Why testing comes first

Before we alter the installation, we need to establish that the existing installation and the relevant earthing and bonding arrangements are suitable for the proposed work. If something is not satisfactory, we explain it before additional remedial work is carried out.

Do I need an EICR before a new fuse box?

For the clearest picture of the property before replacement, a full EICR is strongly recommended where the condition of the installation is unknown, older, or has not been properly tested recently. In every case, appropriate pre-installation inspection and testing is required before AVAG proceeds with the consumer unit replacement.

If you already have a recent EICR, upload it with your enquiry. It can be useful supporting information, but AVAG does not rely solely on testing or certification completed by another contractor. Because we will be responsible for the alteration and our certification, we carry out our own appropriate verification and testing before proceeding.

What if faults are found?

Finding a fault does not mean you automatically receive an unexpected bill. We explain what has been identified, what is required for the proposed work, and what is optional or can be planned separately. Any additional remedial work is priced and agreed with you before it is carried out.

Modern protectionRCBO protection can isolate an individual circuit rather than taking out a group of circuits under one shared RCD.
Surge protectionSPD protection is included in our recommended modern consumer unit specification where appropriate.
Testing & certificationThe completed alteration is inspected, tested and certified for the work carried out.
Clear scopeIf the existing installation needs remedial work, the extra scope is discussed before proceeding.

How the photo estimate works

  1. Upload up to four clear photographs of the existing consumer unit, labels and surrounding meter area.
  2. Tell us the property type, postcode and anything you already know about the installation.
  3. If you have an EICR, attach the PDF so we can review it as supporting information.
  4. We review the photos and give an initial estimate. The final scope is confirmed after the necessary inspection and testing.
Can you give a final fixed price from photographs?+

Photos are very useful for an initial estimate, but they cannot show the electrical condition of every circuit. The final scope depends on inspection and testing.

Can I use an EICR from another electrician?+

Yes, please send it to us. We will review it, but we will still carry out our own appropriate checks because AVAG will be responsible for the alteration and certification.

Does a new consumer unit fix existing wiring problems?+

No. A new consumer unit improves protection, but it does not repair damaged or unsuitable wiring. Existing faults may require separate remedial work.

Will the power be switched off?+

Yes. The supply must be safely isolated while the existing unit is replaced, connections are completed and circuits are tested.

Important

A photograph cannot confirm whether the existing circuits are electrically sound. AVAG carries out its own appropriate inspection and testing before taking responsibility for the replacement and certification. Any additional remedial work is discussed and agreed separately.

Upload at least one clear image. Four separate photo fields are provided because Netlify stores one uploaded file per field. Large JPG/PNG/WEBP images are compressed in your browser before sending.

This is a request for an initial estimate, not a fixed quotation. The final price is confirmed after the required inspection/testing and once the agreed scope is known. Netlify limits form submissions with file uploads, so very large files may need to be sent separately.
